On September 19, 2025, as part of the AD. Augusta project, a career guidance workshop was successfully organized for doctoral students interested in exploring the opportunities and challenges of a career in research. The session was moderated by Ph. D. Iulia Monica Oehler-Șincai, senior research fellow at the Institute of World Economy of the Romanian Academy, together with Danteș Elena, director of the AD. Augusta project, and Cristina Duhnea, expert within the project.

Perspectives on a career in research in an academic and international context

The workshop offered participating doctoral students a comprehensive and realistic view of a career in research, with an emphasis on integration into a competitive international academic environment.

In her speech, Ph.D. Iulia Monica Oehler-Șincai addressed topics that are essential for developing a successful career, such as:

  • perseverance and resilience in the face of academic challenges;

  • building international collaboration networks and participating in transnational projects;

  • adaptability to rapid developments in science and technology;

  • accesul la oportunități de deschidere globală în cercetare.

Participants were encouraged to make the most of the resources available to young researchers and to develop a competitive profile by getting involved in international projects, publishing in prestigious journals, and attending relevant scientific conferences.

The formative value of a scientific career

A key moment of the workshop was dedicated to the benefits and satisfactions of a career in research, highlighting:

  • the joy of discovery and direct contribution to the advancement of knowledge;

  • intellectual fulfillment offered by high-level research activity;

  • positive impact on society and the possibility to influence policies and development directions through scientific results.

The interactive discussions allowed doctoral students to ask specific questions and receive answers tailored to the problems they face in their training as researchers.

Profile of the guest expert

Ph.D. Iulia Monica Oehler-Șincai has over 17 years of experience in scientific research, specializing in:

  • international economic relations,

  • trade and investment policies,

  • emerging economies,

  • European integration, BRICS+, and the international monetary system.

She is the author and co-author of over 20 volumes and 100 scientific articles, published in prestigious journals and publishing houses. Among these, the works Trade Power of Asia (2008) and EU Trade with Its Strategic Partners (2012), which have consolidated his reputation in the field of international economics.

The event was organized as part of the project "Establishment and Development of the South-East Regional Center for Research Career Guidance – AD. AUGUSTA" (code 2/16.11.2022), funded by Romania's National Recovery and Resilience PlanInvestment 10: Establishment and financial support of a national network of eight regional career guidance centers as part of the ERA TALENT PLATFORM, implemented by Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digitalization.
